They cashed out their entire $10,000 IRA — their only savings — and bought a distressed property. No mentor. No roadmap. Just a conviction that real estate was the most reliable path to the life they wanted to build together.

From Single Doors to Scalable Systems
Matt spent the first years of his investing career doing what most beginners do — acquiring single-family homes one at a time, managing tenants himself, and learning every lesson the market had to teach. He cycled through multiple strategies: buy-and-hold, fix-and-flip, BRRRR. He made mistakes. He refined his process. He kept going.
Over time, a pattern emerged. The properties that created real, durable wealth weren't the flashy flips — they were the boring, well-managed multi-family assets in stable markets with strong rental demand. Matt pivoted his entire focus toward acquiring and operating those properties, and the results spoke for themselves.
He also discovered something most investors overlook: the importance of market selection. Too many investors buy where they live instead of where the numbers work. Matt built a disciplined framework for targeting landlord-friendly states with strong job growth, affordable cost basis, and expanding populations — primarily across the Southeast and Mountain West.

AMS Capital was formalized as an investment platform when Matt recognized a growing need among professionals in his network — people earning good incomes who had no viable path to building wealth outside of their careers.
